Types of stage lights

There are many types of stage lights and have different applications. The most common lights are:

Main categories: these are the main lights in an event. The main lights can be floodlights or spotlights. Floodlights illuminate a wide area while spotlights illuminate only a small area which is more specific.

Scoop lights: they have the least amount of focus and due to this they are usually used to light a stage from above. Since they don’t have lenses they are the cheapest to buy.

PAR lights: they are often housed in a can-shaped container that is usually attached to a pivot. Due to this you can easily move them around as you need to. This feature makes them ideal to pair with other effects such as smoke machines.

Ellipsoidal reflector spotlights: they are generally known as spotlights and they are mainly used in drawing attention to a particular object or person. They are used for this purpose as they are much brighter and harder than other lights.

Fresnal Lanterns: they can be said to be spotlights; however, they tend to offer a narrow focused area of soft light. The light can be used in providing proper lighting to an actor or object on the stage.

Stage lighting color

As mentioned above, one of the main functions of stage lights is to provide color to the stage; therefore, for ideal results you should choose the right colors.

To make the event interesting you should avoid using only one color. As rule of thumb you should use contrasting colors such as light amber and light blue. To create an interesting layered, shadowed appearance you should use the lights from different angles.

While colors are of great importance, you shouldn’t use extreme colors. You should always prefer mild colors over deep, intense colors. The cool thing with mild colors is that they always enhance the appearance of visuals of a scene.

If the lights will be mainly focused on the actors, you should avoid using green color as green light on human skin isn’t good to look at. If you have to use the color only use it to light the background.
